Acne Problems And Myths Go Hand In Hand
When acne problems strike, it seems almost everyone has advice on how to get rid of the condition. Quit eating chocolate. Go out in the sun. Stand on your head. Deciphering the advice and finding the truth can be almost as much of a nightmare as the acne problems themselves.
So, what’s a person to do?
Getting the facts about acne problems won’t necessarily provide a cure, but it sure can help.
The truth is acne is a condition that doesn’t have a 100 percent cause or cure. What works for one person as an acne cure or effective acne treatment, might not work for another. However, weeding out the myths can at least make the process of finding the right cause and cure go a little faster.
To help, we’ve put together a list of some of the top myths surrounding this condition. These focus on both causes and cures. For the record, the believed main causes of acne are hormones, medications, faulty hair ducts and so on.
Now, for the myth busting:
- Sunlight: There are many people that believe a trip out into the sun will make acne go away. Wrong! The truth is too much sun can make acne worse by irritating the skin. This can, of course, lead to more breakouts. While the sun does make the condition look better for a time, its effects won’t last.
- Foods: Everything from chocolate to greasy, fried foods gets the blame for causing acne. These might not be good for the body if eaten in abundance, but they don’t specifically have a link to the condition.
- Lack of cleanliness: There are those that believe acne problems are caused by a lack of washing. This, too, isn’t true. Two gentle cleansings a day is important, but over washing and scrubbing can actually cause more breakouts by irritating already irritated skin. In fact, if pimples are inadvertently popped during a scrub (or forced to pop), acne scars can result.
- Popping: Many believe this speeds up healing. They’re wrong, at least in the case of home use. While dermatologists might pop pimples or remove blackheads in their offices, this isn’t a trick to do at home. The fact is the doctors know what they’re doing to help avoid scars and most other people don’t. If you pick, pop or smash, you could go from a face full of pimples to a face full of scars. Avoid this by resisting the urge.
